I will admit upfront, the author of the book is a friend and former co-worker. So, when he told me he's written a book I gladly said I'd read it while secreatly dreading it might be bad and I'd have to figure out what to say when I spoke with him. Fortunately, within the first two paragraphs I knew Martin could write, and within about five pages I was hooked. By the end of the first chapter, I forgot about Martin completely and just got lost in the story.The main character, Norman Kross, was interesting and complex, flawed but still someone you route for. His family dynamics were probably more honest than most people would care to admit, and the characters and settings appearing in the book were well drawn and evolkative. I found myself saying "I'll stop at the next section," but when it came, I'd find I could make it to the next after that. And as a reader of mystery books, I often can see where a story is going and how it will end, and this story kept me guessing.
I won't try to summarize the book, I see others have and I'm sure they have done a better job than I. The point of my review is to say that this is a good, solid mystery and I definitely recommend it. And this from someone that came into it skeptical. (By the way, I gave it four stars only because I couldn't give it a plus and because I reserve a pure five star review for, well, the rarest of occasions.)

Truly a unique and bizarre tale of intrigue and suspense. A retired interrogator is given the chance to interview the suspected killer of a client's daughter. Twists and turns abound as the suspect flips the interrogation around and hounds the man sent to get him to divulge his secrets. Who will win the battle of the minds....it could go either way. Could make an interesting movie.
The Interrogator's Notebook has a lot to offer. For the lover of literary fiction, Martin Ott's skill as a poet brings a richness to the language, themes and characters.
For the fan of the crime noir genre, the book walks us through the contemporary, Obama-era equivalent of Raymond Chandler's Los Angeles, with cunning Hollywood types, poolside treachery and great scenes set in neighborhoods from Silverlake to Bel Air.
The center piece of the book is the interior arc of Norman Kross, a former army interrogator saddled with the middle-age angst that comes with a hectic urban family life as well as the lingering, haunting memories of his days as a globe-trotting spook. Ott pulls it together in a way that is both fresh and comfortingly familiar at the same time -- the hallmark of an accomplished story teller.
It seems entirely appropriate to write this review from a hotel, lighting a cigarette, punching at the phone monitor under the high pitched electric buzz of the street light. We live in America, and battlefield interrogation is as much a part of our reality as daytime TV and family battles.
Martin Ott weaves all of the above together in a story that is so unbelievable, I tried telling myself that this action was all fantasy... until tuning in to the latest news from Guantanamo, or dealing with my own family on a call. The book's star, Norman Cross tries to have as normal an American life as anyone could imagine, until he is confronted head-on by the weird reality we like to imagine goes away when we turn the TV off.
As every Luke Skywalker needs his Darth Vader, and every Xavier needs his Magneto, Cross's ideal enemy seems born to torment him. George Stark's very existence mocks any shred of normality our hero could hope for. Their bizarre battle is reminiscent of Humbert Humbert and Quilty's showdown in Lolita. This book will re-focus you, and you'll never watch the news or pick up a family call again without having been made keenly aware of the cartoon battles that prop up the facade of our reality.
An exciting and entertaining read, Ott keeps the excitement coming and the pages turning. Don't forget your cigarettes!
This is a fascinating glimpse into the life of a man whose job is to get the truth through interrogation. The story isn't about torture, at least not in the physical sense. It's about manipulating people's thoughts, their reactions, and their feelings.
Norman Kross has been an interrogator for a very long time, but the case he works here is the biggest challenge of his career. Through Norman, we see what happens when two masters of mind manipulation are pitted against each other. The truly interesting thing for me was in watching Norman's deterioration. We don't often consider the emotional and psychological damage done to the person in charge of the interrogations.
Martin Ott's own experience in this field adds intense realism to the feel of this complex story. I found it thought-provoking and, at times, absolutely chilling.
While I love my action/adventure books, every once in a while I come across an offering that makes me "think" and this is one of them. I'm about a third of the way in and each chapter appears to be prefaced with an entry in a notebook which in itself contains some deep thoughts. The story revolves around a man's struggles to not only interrogate an individual whom may have committed murder, but to somehow put the pieces of his family life back in order which had suffered these many years as a result of his career. Each of the characters presented along the way are multi-layered and highly descriptive which only adds to the storyline. Haven't had a quality read like this since something like 5 months ago with "Trusting Evil" by Mary Leo (please give my review a look for that as well if you like). Thus far I've found it to be an extremely well-crafted book and I look forward to the finish! ***UPDATE***I finished the morning of 9/28/2013 and on reflection of my earlier review while I took a chance calling this "A MASTERPIECE" having only read a third of the book, I was correct since I have never enjoyed a book more thoroughly and will immediately add this to my favorites list. Great book!
